The Technique Approach To:
Knee Pain

Here at The Technique PT, we have seen a lot of people with knee pain – whether they’re runners or individuals who work out frequently and experience pain during their workouts.

Knee pain can arise from a variety of causes. You might have tight hip muscles or weak ones that have developed over time. Your mechanics might be off, affecting how you move.

One of the most common causes is overuse injuries, where repetitive strain from activities like running, jumping, or cycling leads to conditions such as patellar tendonitis. These occur when muscles and tendons around the knee become inflamed due to excessive stress. Another frequent cause is muscle imbalances or weakness, particularly in the hips, glutes, or quadriceps, which can lead to improper alignment and added strain on the knee joint. Tightness is the surrounding muscles, such as the hamstrings or the hip flexors can also contribute by limiting the joint’s range of motion.

What Are The Symptoms Of Knee Pain?

The symptoms of knee pain which we frequently encounter at the clinic include aching, sharp pain, or a burning sensation in or around the knee joint. Swelling and stiffness are frequent, often making it difficult to bend or straighten the knee fully. Some people experience clicking, popping, or grinding sensations during movement, which could indicate cartilage damage. Instability or a feeling of the knee “giving out” is another common symptom, especially in ligament injuries.

Pain may worsen with certain activities like walking, climbing stairs, squatting, or prolonged sitting. This discomfort can significantly impact daily life, making routine tasks such as carrying groceries, playing with children, or exercising difficult or even impossible. Chronic knee pain may disrupt sleep, reduce productivity, and lead to a more sedentary lifestyle.

If you are suffering from knee pain and it lasts longer than a week, it’s unlikely to go away on its own. Therefore, seeking the advice of an experienced and skilled physical therapist is essential to halt further damage to the knee joint and quickly recover.

What Is Our Approach To Treating Knee Pain?

At The Technique PT, we use our force plates, or force decks, to test and identify imbalances. We can see which side of your body is weaker, assess your stability on each side, and evaluate your mechanics. For example, you might be leaning more to one side or have a tight lumbar spine contributing to the issue.

We take a very holistic approach because these imbalances can throw off how you walk and run. Our goal is to teach and coach you to get back on the road again. You may have already tried knee braces, topical creams, or even injections, but our comprehensive approach goes beyond that. It includes manual therapy, cupping, targeted stretching, and a strong, evidence-based strength program. With this approach, we’ll help you get to where you want to be.
